The Discworld

Sir Terry Pratchett is an award-winning British novelist who has created The Discworld, a world that is a Disc, resting on the back of four giant elephants which stand on the back of a giant space turtle called the Great A'Tuin.

It is a world of magic with Witches who are more likely to prescribe sucrose and akwa than turn you into a frog and Wizards who like to stick shiny things to their robes (who can never get along), fairies, vampires (some who are totally sworn off blood) werewolves in the police force, a guild for every known profession you could think of, blue scottish pictsies that have seen Braveheart far too many times, fairy godmothers who don't want a servant girl to marry a prince, dragons, imps that are very quick painters, an orangutan in the position of the University Librarian, where the Gods like aetheists (it gives them somiething to aim at) and not forgetting the Death of Rats.

Also there's DEATH himself with his horse Binky (who is just a normal horse, he tried skeletal horses but you always had to stop to wire bones back on and when you came back to a fire horse it was always stood in the middle of a black ring looking sheepish)

There are 37 books in the Discworld series, Pratchett has also written for children and collaborated with writers such as Neil Gaiman.

The first book of the Discworld series is The Colour of Magic, and a film was made for Sky One based on this book and The Light Fantastic. Also his books The Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music have been made into animated films and Going Postal recently premiered on Sky One. The novel, Nation, was recently adapted to a stage play and filmed for special previews in many cinemas around the UK.

Apart from being the ultimate satirical writer of the twenty-first century, Pratchett was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers disease and has devoted himself to sponsoring the charity associated with Alzheimers to find a cure for this terrible disease.

As you can probably tell, Terry Pratchett is one of my favourite authors of all time, has anyone else read any of his books?

Love the ones I've read and should really read more. Favourite so far is probably Monsterous Regiment...but that's just coz Maladict is so swish. My nans are too much like Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax...seriously
